The Public Works Bureau (DSOP) announced in a statement yesterday that it observed a backflow phenomenon in the street sewers on Avenida da Amizade and Rua de Cantão in Zape. Investigations revealed that a heavy accumulation of grease in the downstream drainage network from Rua de Cantão to Rua de Pequim had caused a severe blockage.
In order to restore drainage functionality as quickly as possible, the bureau immediately deployed sewer-cleaning pump trucks and machinery for dredging and clearance, the statement said, adding that given the heavy buildup of grease within the conduits, specialised drill equipment was also introduced to enhance the cleaning process.
The bureau urged the catering industry to strictly comply with the legal provisions on the business operations of catering and related establishments, the statement said, adding that businesses must properly fulfil their responsibilities regarding the maintenance of grease interceptors to prevent grease and oil from being discharged into the public drainage network. Left unchecked, these discharges narrow pipes and disrupt drainage –ultimately triggering severe blockages, sewage leaks, and public health hazards, the bureau warned.
Aiming to ensure the stable operation of Macau’s drainage and sewerage network, and effectively prevent issues such as pipeline blockages and water accumulation, the bureau continues to carry out routine inspections, maintenance, and cleaning of the drainage system, the statement added.
Zape is the Portuguese acronym for Outer Harbour Land Reclamation Zone.
