Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) Deputy Director Leong Lai said yesterday it was beneficial for schoolchildren to learn Putonghua.
However, she also stressed that Putonghua and Cantonese are both important in local schools’ Chinese education.
Leong made the remarks after a regular closed-door meeting of the government-appointed Non-Tertiary Education Committee at the Tourism Activities Centre (CAT) in Zape.
