Fashion designers aren’t shy. Hong Kong’s CENTRESTAGE [sic], a fashion event organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) early this month, sported names of design firms that bristle in all caps or boast otherwise eccentric spellings.
The show featured seven Macau-based designers in a runway show titled “Macao Fashion Parade” at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from September 2 to 5. The participating brands also had dedicated booths in a Macau-centric area on the show floor. The runway show was held under the auspices of the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM).
Dim the lights and crank the techno
The runway show attracted over 300 visitors, according to a Chinese-language press release on the CPTTM website (https://www.cpttm.org.mo/). Guests filed into the dimly lit venue – once they perched on seats of padded cubes, attention turned to the runway space as loud electronic music (the soundtrack of today’s fashions) thudded in the speakers.
The designers
The show opened quirky and cute with adult and child models showing fashions from HKQC (Hakachi City). Founded in Macau in 2021, HKQC is an eco-friendly high-performance children’s wear brand tailored for kids aged 3 to 12.
Next up was a return to basic black from XU’S, which draws inspiration from natural and mystical imagery and incorporates Gambiered Canton Silk (香雲紗) – a China National Intangible Cultural Heritage textile – into contemporary design vocabulary.
JYUT: a modern Chinese womenswear brand from Macau infuses ancient botanical dyeing into modern tailoring and emphasises natural plant tones.
Common Comma focuses on fabrication and functionality, bringing the spirit of streetwear with a hint of high-end fashion trends, yet maintains a quiet attitude.
SHEFEELING is a modern female fashion manufacturing enterprise that incorporates product development, design, production, and sales under one roof. It provides mid- to high-end female fashion for elite urban females that is wearable on multiple occasions.
LA FINE offers pieces that embody passion, purpose, personality, and identity, for today’s youth.
Cloé Jewelry & Art is an independent jewellery design brand based in Macau that uses a variety of natural gemstone materials to create retro-minimalist jewellery.
