An 82-year-old local man with a history of chronic illnesses was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease and is in critical condition after being admitted to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, according to a statement issued by the Health Bureau (SSM) yesterday.
The statement noted that the patient travelled to the Chinese mainland with his family from September 19 to 23 and developed a fever, cough, and shortness of breath starting September 25, for which he sought medical attention at the private Kiang Wu Hospital.
On October 1, due to persistent symptoms, he went to the emergency department of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for medical care, the statement said, adding that a chest X-ray suggested pneumonia, and a urine antigen test on October 3 showed a positive result for Legionella pneumophila.
The patient is currently still hospitalised and was in stable condition at the time of yesterday’s statement. His family members currently show no symptoms, the statement said.
