Tourists and locals alike will have a chance to learn more about Macau’s fishing community through photographs in an upcoming exhibition at the Maritime Museum near A-Ma Temple in Barra.
Organised by the International Institute of Macau (IIM), the trilingual exhibition “People and the Sea: The Fishermen’s Community in Macao” features photos from the museum.
An IIM statement noted that the exhibition also includes research from Mariana Pereira, a researcher at IIM and the Heritage for Global Challenges Research Centre at the University of York in the UK, and doctoral student Jack Wang Deyi. Both are working at IIM on related projects, the statement said.
Pereira also cooperates with Leverhulme Trust, a large national grant-making organisation in the UK that was established in 1925, for the exhibition.
With Macau’s roots as a fishing village, the statement pointed out that the exhibition aims to “portray a brief history of the fishermen’s community, how they practised their profession, fishing in particular, reinforcing the importance of their customs and traditions, which are largely preserved and recognised in items of Macau’s intangible cultural heritage”, using photos as an “expressive portrayal” of the community.
The exhibition will have its opening ceremony at 6:00 p.m. next Thursday, after which members of the public can visit it according to the museum’s opening hours from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Wednesdays to Mondays. It is closed on Tuesdays.
