On Friday, Lisbon-born veteran photographer António Duarte Mil-Homens celebrated his 77th birthday, and coinciding with that was the launch of his latest photo showcase “Sunset, Moonrise…”

Featuring 21 photos that were all recently taken in Portugal, those keen on seeing the lensman’s works can find them displayed on the first floor of the Glass House in Praça do Tap Siac (塔石廣場), a venue that compliments the pictures with a view of Macau’s own sunsets and moonrises.

Through his lens, the essentially self-taught Mil-Homens, whose career spans over 52 years, captured the silhouettes of trees illuminated by a setting sun, the sky as it develops colours like a tinge of red and orange during dusk, and a landscape lit up by the Moon and distant, yet bright stars, just to name a few.

In all, organiser Casa de Portugal em Macau (“CPM – Portugal’s House in Macau”) said it hopes that the exhibition will encourage contemplation on “the fleeting beauty of sunset and moonrise”, as noted in a statement at the venue.

The statement quoted CPM President of the Board Maria Amélia António as pointing out that the exhibition proves special for the photographer for his strong bond with the association, having joined its initiatives over the years and taught a variety of photography courses and workshops, as well as “contributed significantly to the enrichment of Macau’s cultural life”.

An award-winning photographer, Mil-Homens’ extensive career started when he picked up his first camera in April 25, 1974, going full-time in 1984. The work he has done since shows a varied career, ranging from photojournalism and news reporting to scientific photography. The statement added that among the fields he has covered are teaching and research, advertising, events and spectacles, sports, food, and corporate photography.

Portugal’s anti-colonialist and pro-democracy Carnation Revolution erupted on April 25, 1974 in Lisbon.

Meanwhile, he has held 27 solo exhibitions and joined 37 group photography and art shows, while his photos have also been published in dozens of books. Moreover, he has organised and taught 52 photography courses since 1989, along with various workshops.

Outside of photography, Mil-Homens has published three books and has held two painting exhibitions.

Members of the public can view the works daily from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. until November 8. Admission is free.
