The 12th Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF) will be held in Macau from this Thursday through Saturday, bringing together international tourism industry leaders, government officials and experts to discuss the future of the global tourism economy, according to a statement by the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance yesterday.

Under the theme “Crisis • Resilience • Evolution – Building a Tourism Economy for a Shared Future”, the forum will explore challenges and opportunities facing the industry amid changes in the global economic landscape, the statement said, adding that topics will include tourism economy resilience, cultural tourism, inbound travel, “tourism +” initiatives, mountain residential tourism, AI and sustainable growth.

Discussions will also consider how the industry can prepare for the United Nations’ designation of 2027 as the “International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism”, the statement noted, adding that the programme will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, cultural tourism presentations, fireside chats and business-matching sessions, providing opportunities for policy exchanges, experiences and industry collaboration.

Familiarisation tours in Macau and the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin will also be arranged to showcase opportunities for cooperation in infrastructure connectivity, tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) resources, the statement said, underlining that Spain will participate as the forum’s “Partner Country”, talking about its experience in destination management, balanced regional development and sustainable tourism. Hainan Province, the “Featured Province”, will present the development of its Free Trade Port and its progress in opening up to the international market.

Launched in Macau in 2012, the forum has so far attracted more than 15,500 participants from 88 countries and regions, alongside over 780 internationally recognised speakers, the statement said, noting that the local government aims to use the platform to strengthen international connections, promote high-quality tourism development and support the region’s sustainable economic growth.
