Caritas Macau will open two community canteens in the near future – one in the Praia do Manduco (known as Ha Van in Cantonese) neighbourhood and the other in the Areia Preta district.
Caritas Macau Secretary-General Paul Pun Chi Meng made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Wednesday on the sidelines of an arts exhibition held in the activity room of Flower City Park in Taipa.
The one on Rua da Praia do Manduco (下環街) is now ready for operation and can open in a few days, Pun said.
The preparations for the one in the Areia Preta district are still underway, Pun said, adding that it is expected to open about a fortnight after the one in the Ha Van district opens.
The local Catholic social service organisation opened a community canteen – known as Delightful Kitchen – on Rua Nova à Guia – the street running from Hotel Royal to S. Francisco Garden – in 2021. This eatery has recently stopped operating. Earlier this year, Caritas indicated its decision to relocate its Delightful Kitchen on Rua Nova à Guia to the Areia Preta district before the end of this year.
Pun said on Wednesday that the two new community canteens – despite primarily catering to the dietary needs of senior citizens – will be open to everyone, with seniors enjoying a discount.
The two new “Delightful Kitchens” will be open from lunchtime through dinner time. The Ha Van one can accommodate 20 patrons, while the Areia Preta one will be larger, with a capacity of 30 diners, according to Pun.
Meanwhile, Pun also said that Caritas is planning to build a care home for senior citizens near Kun Iam Temple on Avenida do Coronel Mesquita (美副將大馬路). The project is expected to be completed around the middle of 2028 “if everything goes well”, he said.
