Macau is expected to experience hot and dry weather from the weekend into early next week as Super Typhoon Champi’s subsiding air affects the Guangdong coast, with maximum temperatures in some areas reaching 33 degrees Celsius or above, according to a statement by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) yesterday.

While daytime weather will remain sunny and hot, mornings and evenings will feel slightly cooler, resulting in a larger difference between day and night temperatures, the statement said.

The local observatory advised residents to wear light jackets when going out early or returning late, particularly older people, young children and those in poor health, who should take precautions against catching a chill, the statement noted, adding that Champi, currently over the northwestern Pacific Ocean, is expected to move towards waters east of China’s Taiwan region over the next day or the day after before likely turning northward.

However, its peripheral subsiding air is forecast to affect the Guangdong coast over the weekend, the statement underlined, pointing out that combined with the dry air brought by the northeast monsoon, the conditions are expected to bring sunny, dry and extremely hot weather to Macau from the weekend into early next week.

The observatory advised residents engaging in outdoor activities to take precautions against heatstroke, stay hydrated and apply adequate sun protection.
