Uber Taxi announced in a statement yesterday a 130 percent increase in active passengers from the Chinese mainland during the National Day Golden Week from October 1 to 7, being a “popular choice” to get around Macau during the period.
The statement did not reveal Uber’s number of passengers during the period.
The statement highlighted popular areas frequented by mainland travellers according to Uber data, noting that aside from hotels and integrated resorts, the three stops that proved most popular were: the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ruins of St. Paul’s, the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre, and the Macao Science Centre (MSC).
Uber Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau General Manager Estyn Chung (鍾志霆) was quoted by the statement as saying that they were “very encouraged” by the results achieved while also highlighting the role of the “WeChat Uber mini program” for its convenience.
The company launched the programme last month in anticipation of peak tourism events and was mainly aimed at travellers from the Chinese mainland. WeChat’s mini programmes are applications that run within the app, allowing access to services ranging from shopping and dining to public utilities, according to the WeChat newsroom website.
Chung said in the statement: “In the future, we will continue to work closely with the local Macau taxi industry, as a technology platform connecting passengers with local licensed taxis, to jointly contribute to the continuous development of Macau’s tourism”.
The US multinational transportation company returned to Macau with Uber Meter Taxi in February this year after suspending its services in the city in 2017.
