Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, on behalf of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR), yesterday expressed his profound sorrow over the passing of former vice premier Liu Yandong, according to a statement by the Macao Government Information Bureau (GCS) last night.

Xinhua reported yesterday evening that Liu passed away due to illness at the age of 81 in Beijing at 2:53 p.m. yesterday.

Liu also served as a member of the Political Bureau of the 17th and 18th Central Committees of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and a vice-chairperson of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Liu was “an excellent Party member, a time-tested and loyal communist fighter, and an outstanding leader in the CPC’s united front work and in the fields of education, science and technology, health, and children and women work in the country”, Xinhua said.

According to last night’s GCS statement, Sam stated that Liu served in important leadership roles in the Party and the country for a long time and was an outstanding leader in united front work as well as in the fields of education, science and technology, health, and children and women work. During her tenure as deputy leader of the Central Coordination Group for Hong Kong and Macao Affairs, she attached great importance to and supported Macau’s prosperity and development. She visited Macau twice, in 2006 and 2009, to inspect the city and provide guidance, gaining firsthand understanding of the MSAR’s work on improving residents’ daily lives and social development, and always keeping Macau compatriots’ well-being close to her heart.

“The vast number of Macau compatriots express their heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable guidance and strong support she rendered to the development of the MSAR. Her remarkable leadership skills and noble character will be remembered forever and serve as an enduring inspiration to us all,” the GCS statement quoted Sam as saying.
