In order to promote the widespread application of artificial intelligence (AI) in Macau, Pui Va Middle School of Macau and CTM co-organised the city’s first intercollegiate AI sports contest on Tuesday as part of its “29th Annual Sports Day”.
According to a statement released to the Post yesterday, the event, which took place at the Olympic Sports Centre – Stadium, used an innovative “AI + Sports” model to enable synchronous participation across schools and city districts through real-time cloud streaming.
It also employed AI-based sports solutions to provide participating students with instant movement assessments, repetition counts, and success-rate calculations, highlighting the effective application of AI in both intellectual and physical education settings, the statement said. It added that this allowed students on different campuses to overcome geographical limitations and take part in the friendly competition simultaneously, experiencing the joy of learning through technology while engaging in sport.
With the support of AI technology from Dawei (International) AI Technology Company Limited, the statement noted, students from Escola dos Moradores de Macau Secondary School (EMM)* and Fukien School** were invited to join Pui Va Middle School during Pui Va’s sports day. A total of 120 primary and secondary school students were brought together to take part in two separate skipping friendly competitions.
In the statement, Pui Va Middle School Principal Lei Chao Lam said that the event was a significant occasion, marking the first jointly organised activity since Pui Va Middle School and CTM formally signed their AI cooperation agreement. Lei noted that the two parties are cooperating to leverage their respective strengths and jointly build a smart campus while promoting the deep integration of AI into school sports. Lei added he hopes that Pui Va Middle School and CTM will further deepen their partnership and continue holding a diverse range of AI experience activities. This will allow students to cultivate innovative thinking and digital-literacy skills through practical application, ultimately contributing to the development of AI education in Macau.
CTM Vice President for Commercial Services Ebel Cham Pou I said that, as a key stakeholder driving AI development in Macau, CTM has been working closely with various industries to explore digital transformation scenarios and opportunities grounded in AI and big data technologies.
Following its earlier collaboration with Pui Va Middle School on an AI vocational skills course, CTM has once again joined hands with the school to create a novel sports experience for students using AI, Cham said. She added that by employing cloud technology to enable synchronous participation across schools, the event broke the framework of traditional sports competitions and added a new chapter to Macau’s AI application case studies. In the future, CTM will continue working with industry partners to accelerate the development of Macau’s AI-driven digital transformation, Cham said.
*Its unofficial English name is “Macau Residents School”. It is run by the Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (UGAMM), also known as Kai Fong, its short name in Cantonese.
** Fukien is the Cantonese transliteration of Fujian. Up to one-fifth of Macau’s population is estimated to be of Fujianese ancestry.
