The city’s controversial rent control bill caused a heated discussion among panellists and members of the audience at yesterday’s Macau Forum, as some feared that rent control measures would lead to rent increases while others said it was necessary for the government to step in to adjust the city’s overheated rental market.
The weekly open-air debate is hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM in Areia Preta Park every Sunday. Yesterday’s forum saw a record audience attendance of around 70.
An outline of the rent control bill was put forward by nine lawmakers and passed by the legislature in 2015. It is slated to be submitted for a final article-by-article vote to a plenum of the legislature next month.
