People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Macau Garrison Commander Wang Wen pledged yesterday that the garrison will make greater contributions to maintain the long-term prosperity and stability of Macau.
Wang made the remarks in a speech during a reception to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the PLA, at the garrison’s Taipa barracks.
According to a statement from the garrison, about 500 people attended the reception, including local government officials, central government officials posted to Macau, local deputies to the National People’s Congress (NPC) and local members of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), as well as representatives of major local associations and local tertiary education institutions.
The attendees also included some participants in previous military summer camps for young local citizens, which are co-organised annually by the local government and the PLA Macau Garrison, according to the statement.
Senior local officials and central government officials posted to Macau presided over the reception, namely Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On, Legislative Assembly (AL) President Ho Iat Seng, Court of Final Appeal (TUI) President Sam Hou Fai, as well as Central People’s Government Liaison Office Director Wang Zhimin, Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Commissioner Ye Dabo, PLA Macau Garrison Political Commissar Zhang Zhimeng, in addition to Wang Wen.
Chui’s predecessor Edmund Ho Hau Wah, now a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), also presided over the event.
Wang said that all the personnel of the PLA Macau Garrison need to always remember President Xi Jinping’s instructions to build a strong military. He pledged that the garrison will always uphold the “One Country Two Systems” principle.
Wang also said that the officers and rank and file of the PLA Macau Garrison love Macau and will remain close to local residents.
Wang also said that the garrison was happy to see that Macau is grasping the many opportunities created by the continuous development of the nation and that the city is pushing for economic diversification.
Also delivering a speech during the reception, Chui underlined that Macau has been able to develop its economy, improve residents’ livelihoods and maintain social harmony thanks to the central government’s strong support as well as the strong protection of the PLA Macau Garrison.
Chui said the local government was determined to promote Macau’s long-term prosperity and stability and to achieve the aims stipulated in his government’s Five-Year Development Plan, which was released last year, by making good use of Macau’s advantages and the strong support of the central government.
Chui also pointed out that the PLA Macau Garrison has developed close ties with the local population, adding that the garrison has gained recognition and respect from local civil society.
