The lone suspect in Sunday’s arson attack in Iao Hon was arrested last night and admitted that he was drunk when he set a fire in an alley that damaged seven scooters, a van, an air conditioner, two mattresses and the metal gate of a shop, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman told reporters last night.

The spokesman briefed the media after arresting the suspect at his Areia Preta flat at 6.30 p.m., telling reporters that through CCTV footage, the police managed to identify the suspect as a 33-year-old Philippine national surnamed Mendoza, a non-resident worker employed as a chef.

According to the spokesman, Mendoza’s arson attack caused damage estimated at 100,000 patacas.

The spokesman said that Mendoza told the police he had a few drinks during dinner on Saturday night and then went to a friend’s place in Iao Hon to drink some more. On his way home at around 4 a.m., he went past Man Sao Building where he set fire to some clothes. The fire was put out by residents but not reported.
