Slated for next month, “Songs of Lear” has been cancelled by the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) as the complex has been temporarily closed due to major damage caused by Typhoon Hato that pummelled the city last Wednesday.

Cancellation notices have been put up on the centre’s website, informing the public that due to the damage caused by the killer typhoon, the centre “has to remain temporarily closed until further notice”.

The cancellation of the September 10 performance of “Songs of Lear” by Polish company “Songs of the Goat Theatre” was announced by the centre on Monday, followed by the cancellation of many of the centre’s popular “ARTmusing Summer” workshops and shows as well as performances by other entities.

Shows by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) scheduled for September at the centre have also been cancelled, with the bureau saying on CCM’s website it decided to “centralise its resources for carrying out post-typhoon assistance and repairing [typhoon-]damaged cultural facilities”.

The cancelled events include “The Bridge – Yan Huichang and the Macao Chinese Orchestra” scheduled for Friday, “Kyung Wha Chung and the Macao Orchestra” scheduled for Saturday, and the “Haojiang Moonlight Night – Opera Warriors” ballet scheduled for September 15-16. The free concert “Flourishing Arts” scheduled for September 8 will be rescheduled and details will be announced in due course.

All tickets will be fully refunded, according to the website.

A CCM spokesperson told the media yesterday that due to the typhoon aftermath about 20 events have been cancelled.
