Local animal protection group Anima President Albano Martins said yesterday that over 100 residents had offered to temporarily look after one or two of the cats that usually stay at the group’s Cats’ Paradise, a feline shelter in Coloane, which was seriously damaged by Typhoon Hato last Wednesday.

According to a statement by the group on Saturday, Animaasked the general public to foster one or two of the group’s cats from Cats’ Paradise for two months since the group needs some time to repair the roof, fences and other facilities.

Speaking to The Macau Post Daily yesterday in a phone interview, Martins said about 240 cats stayed at Cats’ Paradise before Hato. The group “lost” about 40 cats because of the typhoon, according to Martins, who did not elaborate.

Martins said so far over 100 residents had contacted his group, saying that they were willing to help. He also said he expected his
group to spend about 500,000 patacas on repairing all the facilities in Cats’ Paradise.

The facility was only opened in November last year.

According to the statement, the group will ask the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) to look after the cats rescued by Anima during the period that Cats’ Paradise is being repaired.
