Macau Bar Benders Association President Wong Wai Man, who heads the Mutual Help Grassroots, No. 22 on Sunday’s ballot, proposes the cancellation of the government’s subsidised home-ownership scheme (HOS), according to his group’s political platform.

Wong has recently become an “Internet celebrity”. His group’s campaign poster and footage of Wong attending the election debate hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM last week have gone viral on social media. During the debate, Wong spoke Cantonese with a heavy Taishan accent. Taishan is a city in south-eastern Guangdong, north of Macau. Tens of thousands of Macau residents are of Taishan descent. Some local netizens call him “Captain Macau” (modelled on “Captain America”), while Hong Kong media call him “Macau’s Ironman”.

The Macau Post Daily phoned Wong on Tuesday. Wong said he was in hospital and did not want to be interviewed.
