A man from the mainland was arrested yesterday for robbing a jewellery shop in Toi San district, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said during a special press conference at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters in Zape.

According to Choi, the male suspect, surnamed Chen, is a 43-year-old unemployed man from the mainland.

The spokesman said that on the evening of September 21, Chen entered a jewellery shop in Rua do Canal das Hortas, with a sales assistant and the owner inside. Chen acted as if he were a customer and asked the staff member to show him a gold chain and a gold bar, both costing over 172,000 patacas. After inspecting the two pieces, the suspect pretended to take money out of his bag to make the purchase. Instead, he took out some pepper and threw it at the sales assistant and owner, picked up the gold chain and gold bar and made his escape.
