Being City of Gastronomy is great, but at what cost?

Last month Macau was designated a Creative City of Gastronomy by the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Michelin has bestowed 19 local restaurants with stars – both awards we are proud of, but at what cost to the local street eatery scene?

As of late you may have noticed that our vibrant street eateries, most serving good, tasty and cheap food have been gradually disappearing.

Probably up the late 90s you could go to the Red Market area and see numerous late night street restaurants, in the side streets of Rua do Lu Cao and Rua da Emenda, crammed to the gills with locals and tourists alike enjoying local fare and even more people waiting to be seated.
