Social media has been buzzing recently as photos of what seem to be a bear’s footprints in the woods and bear poop along a hiking trail in Coloane have been circulating online, with the most recent ones showing a blurry image of a big furry animal scavenging near a rubbish tip on a beach, and a night photo showing a shadow of a lonely old bear overlooking a lit-up city.

The bears are in fact the work of Daniele Poidomani, artistic director from the Australian Memetica theatre troupe specialising in giant puppets and Hope Chiang, theatre director of the local Point View Art Association, for the 17th Macau City Fringe Festival, which opens today.

This year’s 10-day festival, themed “Treasures Hunting”, features programmes that will take the public out of the box and to the streets to discover things that have likely been forgotten or overlooked through different forms of artistic expression.
