A division chief from the Macau Customs Service has been arrested for allegedly abusing his power by instructing his subordinates to release seized goods back to their owner without following clearance procedures, the Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the division chief, whose name was not given, allegedly committed the crime of dereliction of duty, which is punishable by imprisonment of up to five years. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP).

The statement said that the case took place early last year, when customs officers at one of Macau’s border checkpoints discovered a batch of illegally imported goods that had not been declared according to the law, pointing out that a number items requiring import licences were included in the batch.
