The government’s proposal to raise the fees for its childbirth services at the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre for non-local women whose husbands are also non-locals aims to safeguard the quality of the public hospital’s childbirth services for local residents, Lei Wai Seng, a senior doctor at the public hospital, said yesterday.

Lei also said the government had fully taken into account the possible impact on non-resident workers when it proposed the new charging scheme.

Lei made the remarks as a guest speaker at Macau Forum, a weekly open-air debate hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM in Areia Preta Park every Sunday.
