A man and a woman from the mainland were arrested on Friday for human trafficking, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Cho Man said during a special press conference at the PJ headquarters on Saturday.
Chan identified the two suspects as a 30-year-old woman surnamed Lian, and a 26-year-old man surnamed Zhou, with both claiming to be unemployed.
Chan said that on March 4 the police in Cotai caught a 17-year-old prostitute from Jilin province. After questioning, she told the police that she had met two men in her hometown last year, who persuaded her to work as a prostitute in Macau, as her family were in dire financial straits at that time. One of the two men, who were not identified by the spokesman, then took the girl to Zhuhai to introduce her to Lian and Zhou.
