The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) said in a statement yesterday that 1.05 million red packets (known as ‘lai see’ in Cantonese) collected from residents during a one-month scheme that ended earlier this month can be reused and distributed to residents in the run-up to the Chinese New Year (CNY) next year.

According to the statement, the bureau collected a total of 2.1 million red packets – also known as red envelopes – during the period of the scheme which started on February 26 and ended on March 11.

After the bureau’s staff sorted the collected red packets, 1.05 million red packets were classified as being in a good condition and can be reused, while the others were deemed unsuitable for reuse and will be recycled, the statement said.
