The police have arrested a suspect from Taiwan behind at least 16 phone scams last year involving about one millions patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a special press conference yesterday.

Ho identified the suspect as a 38-year-old man surnamed Lu, a salesperson.

According to Ho, last year the police received phone scam reports from three local residents between July and August. They had received phone calls in which the person on the line claimed to be a police officer investigating the victims’ alleged involvement in money laundering. The three victims were instructed to transfer money to a certain account, and between them lost about 440,000 patacas.
