Northern District Community Service Consultative Council member Hoi Long Tong said yesterday that food waste is made of biodegradable organic contents, and if the city’s food waste is not managed well, it could create sanitary issues for the public, so the government should handle food waste well.
Hoi made the remarks during a regular meeting of the government-appointed council in Areia Preta.
According to a report released the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) last year, the city’s solid waste incineration plant in 2016 handled a total of 504,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste, compared to 329,000 tonnes in 2011, while each resident on average produced 2.11 kilogrammes of waste each day in 2016 .
