Privacy watchdog launches 217 probes last year

The Personal Data Protection Office (GPDP) last year launched 217 investigations into the collection and handling of such data, down 3.1 percent year-on-year, GPDP Director Yang Chongwei said yesterday.

Yang, his deputy Iao Hin Chit, and three GPDP officials co-hosted a press conference on the city’s privacy statistics and their office’s work and investigations during 2017 at their office in China Plaza.

According to Yang, of the total number of investigations last year, 141 involved private entities, accounting for 65 percent, while 65 involved individuals and 12 targeted public entities.
