Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) Director Susana Wong Soi Man said yesterday she expects the government to invite bids for a flood protection wall project along the Inner Harbour area “after this month”, adding she was “sure” that the project cannot be completed this year.

Wong made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the Customer Liaison Group (CLG) of public utility Macao Water at MGM Cotai.

The bureau said in a statement in March that the government was planning to build a flood protection wall along the waterfront in the Inner Harbour area, with the aim of blocking floods “of a scale that happen every 20 years”. The statement noted that a tidal gate project between the Macau peninsula and Wanzai in Zhuhai was expected to be completed “several years later” as it required collaboration with the mainland authorities.
