In two separate cases, the Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested one female and four male mainlanders for operating nine fake base stations in a flat in Nam Van, as well as a local man for running another seven fake base stations in a flat in Zape, PJ spokesman Lai Man Vai said during a special outdoor press conference in Nam Van last night.
A fake base station is telecom equipment which sends out a signal, disconnecting mobile phone users in an area from their legitimate base stations and who then receive messages from the bogus one instead
In the first case, the five mainlanders aged between 33 and 50, all claiming to be unemployed, told PJ officers they were hired on the mainland and were paid a daily salary of 200 yuan. They ran their business out of a flat in Lake View Tower near Praça de Ferreira do Amaral.
