A 10-month-old baby boy was found abandoned in a commercial centre in Avenida de Artur Tamagnini Barbosa on Saturday, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a regular press conference at the PJ headquarters yesterday.

Leng said that on Friday a 34-year-old local woman went to a Public Security Police (PSP) station with a baby. The woman told police officers that a friend of hers asked her to take care of the baby, but didn’t come back to collect it. However, she couldn’t contact her friend later so she went to the police for help.

According to Leng, PSP officers recorded the identity of the baby, who is a mainland resident, and later the woman left the police station with the baby.

Leng said that at 7 p.m. on Saturday a man found the baby, who was in a pushchair, unattended in the lobby of the commercial centre, and then called the police. PSP officers arrived at the scene where they discovered in the pushchair two identification documents – a Hong Kong Re-entry Permit, and an Exit/ Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau, which are assumed to be the baby’s.

PSP officers later confirmed that the documents had the same information recorded by the police the previous day.

Police officers checked the CCTV footage at the commercial centre and discovered that a woman entered the lobby with the pushchair earlier that evening. She appeared to be taking pictures of the baby with a smartphone before she left it behind.

According to Leng, the police will look into whether the woman in Saturday’s footage was the same as the one who went to the police on Friday.

Leng noted that the baby didn’t have a patient record in Macau. The infant was transferred by the police to the public Conde de S. Januario Hospital Centre for a check-up. He was found to be healthy.

Leng said that the baby has been taken into the care of the Social Affairs Bureau (IAS) as he was found abandoned, adding that the police were continuing their investigations into the case.
