Hotel guests rise 8.8 pct to 4.5 million in Jan-April

Macau’s 115 hotels and guesthouses recorded 4.5 million guests in the first four months of the year, a year-on-year increase of 8.8 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

The average occupancy rate rose by 4.7 percentage points to 88.9 percent. Guests’ average length of stay went up by 0.1 night to 1.5 nights.

The hospitality industry’s number of guest rooms grew by 6 percent to 39,000, with 5-star hotel rooms rising by 7.9 percent to 24,000, accounting for 61.2 percent of the total.

In April, the number of guests rose by 7.6 percent year on year to 1.16 million. Mainlanders accounted for 68 percent of all guests. While the number of mainland Chinese guests rose 16.8 percent, those from Hong Kong (135,000) and South Korea (35,000) dropped by 3.6 percent and 19.5 percent respectively. The number of guests from Taiwan rose by 4.5 percent to 43,000 in April.
