The Judiciary Police (PJ) investigated 23 cases of burglaries in residential units between January and April this year, 13 cases more than in the same period last year, PJ director Sit Chong Meng said yesterday, adding that many of the burglars appear to prefer homes in Taipa.
Sit also said that the total pecuniary loss of the 23 burglaries amounted to more than seven million patacas.
Sit made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with key members of several community associations and property management associations at the PJ headquarters in Zape. In the meeting, which was open to the media, Sit and other PJ senior officers exchanged opinions with the representatives about how to improve security at residential buildings.
The aim of the meeting was to raise awareness of anti-burglary prevention measures in high-rise buildings. Some of the representatives received certificates for the outstanding anti-crime community activities.
Sit said that over 80 percent of the burglaries during the first four months occurred in high-rise residential buildings, adding that many of the household break-ins happened in Taipa.
Sit also said that the burglars usually choose to break into the victims’ homes during the daytime, adding that most of them use a “master key” to open the doors so that they can enter the flats.
Sit urged residents and doormen working in residential buildings to stay vigilant of possible burglaries.
Sit also said that most of the victims of phone scam cases recorded so far this year were university students.
