Two thefts took place within an hour at two jewellery shops in the city on Wednesday, with a total loss of over 300,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said during a regular press conference at the PJ headquarters in Zape yesterday.

Referring to the first case, Choi said that at about 5 p.m. on that day, three men of South East Asian appearance went into a jewellery shop in Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida. The trio were chatting to the shop owner and tried on various rings. They left the shop after half an hour. The owner later realised that a ring, worth about HK$50,000, was missing, and so reported the theft to the police.

Meanwhile, two men who were also believed to be South East Asians went in to a jewellery shop near Hotel Lisboa at 5:45 p.m., according to Choi. The duo asked the shop manager, who was alone in the shop at the time, to show them various pieces of jewellery. The two men only stayed in the shop for a few minutes, and then left without buying anything. The manager soon discovered that a diamond necklace worth HK$248,000 had disappeared and hence reported the theft to the police.
