Five university students have been arrested for smoking cannabis, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a regular press conference in Zape yesterday.

According to Leng, the five local male suspects are aged between 21 and 23. They study at two universities on the peninsula.

Leng said that Wu, one of the five students, aged 21, went to the home of a friend – who is among the five, in Areia Preta and smoked marijuana on Thursday evening. After taking the drug, Wu felt unwell so he decided to go home. On the way home, he felt very sick and called for an ambulance from the Fire Services Bureau (CB). He was taken to the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital for treatment.

At the hospital, Wu admitted the he had been smoking marijuana earlier that evening, and later a drug test confirmed it, Leng said.
The hospital afterwards notified the Judiciary Police (PJ) about the incident.

Under questioning, Wu said that he was smoking weed with three fellow students that evening which they purchased from a student surnamed Tam. The police located the four other suspects and confirmed through drug tests that they had all smoked the psychoactive drug. Tam told PJ officers that he got the drug for free from a stranger at a night entertainment venue in Zape and later sold three joints to the other four for 900 patacas.

Leng said that the police seized a total of 4.53 grammes of cannabis with a street value of 2,300 patacas along with drug paraphernalia in the operation.

The five has been arrested and transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) said in a statement yesterday that it was “greatly concerned” about the case, adding that it has contacted the related tertiary education institutions over the incident, adding that it would like to provide counselling and support to the drug-takers.
