Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosario said yesterday it was necessary to close public car parks in the city’s low-lying areas whenever the No. 8 typhoon signal is hoisted.

Rosario made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Macau Tower after attending a reception in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Chinese-language newspaper Macao Daily News. The biggest local newspaper was founded on August 15, 1958.

The government amended the regulations for the use and operation of 13 public car parks in the city’s low-lying areas earlier this year. Under the amendments, the 13 public car parks must be closed one hour after the No. 8 tropical cyclone signal is hoisted or after the third level of a storm surge warning signal has been issued.
