A seriously-ill local female who attends Huaqiao University in Fujian province, has come out of her coma at the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital.

According to a Health Bureau (SSM) statement yesterday, at the onset of her illness, the 20-year-old patient was admitted to the Quanzhou First Hospital, where she was diagnosed as having viral encephalitis – an inflammation of the brain caused by a virus – while the virus was not identified. She had been suffering from various symptoms including seizures and later fell into a coma.

The case, which was shared on Facebook, caught the attention of the local authorities. The Health Bureau (SSM) became aware of the case, and doctors from the bureau contacted the patient’s family as well as the related mainland authorities to enquire about her condition.
