A 15-year-old local female pupil who sought treatment at the private Kiang Wu Hospital last Tuesday has been diagnosed with Tsutsugamushi disease (also known as scrub typhus), the Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the girl began to run a fever and suffer from neck pain and a headache on September 2. She had seen a doctor several times since then. However, she came down in a rash and had an eschar on her left buttock last Tuesday. She went to the private Kiang Wu Hospital, where she was diagnosed with the disease.

The statement noted that the patient has a dog and a hamster, and sometimes she walks her dog in Areia Preta Park. As she didn’t travel during the incubation period, the case was listed as a local case.
