Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On said yesterday that he was very saddened by the death of Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau Director Zheng Xiaosong who had worked very hard.

Chui made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Federal Restaurant in Zape on the sidelines of a National Day banquet hosted by the Macau Media Workers Association (known in Cantonese as Kei Hip).

The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HMO) of the State Council in Beijing announced in a brief statement on its website on Sunday morning that Zheng, 59, fell to his death – “because he was suffering from depression” – from the building where he lived on Saturday evening. The news of Zheng’s death has shocked political figures, civic leaders and the public at large. Many have praised him for his dedication to work and his ability to communicate with local people of different political and social backgrounds.

The local liaison office director is the highest-ranking central government official posted to Macau.

Zheng took up the post in September last year, replacing Wang Zhimin who became the director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Hong Kong. Zheng was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

When asked by the media yesterday about Zheng’s death, Chui noted that the central government has already announced that Zheng fell to his death “due to depression”, adding that he was very saddened by Zheng’s death.

Chui said that he had been in a close working relationship with Zheng since September last year – when the latter took up the post of liaison chief in Macau – until recently, adding that he had also often met Zheng at public events.

Chui said that Zheng was an official who worked very hard, adding that he had had harmonious interactions with Zheng.

Chui said that both he and Zheng shared the same work goal for Macau, which was, Chui said, to strive for maintaining Macau’s long-term prosperity and stability, as well as Late liaison chief worked very hard: Chui Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On addresses yesterday’s National Day banquet hosted by the Macau Media Workers Association at Federal Restaurant. Meanwhile, Chui said that his government was well prepared for the commencement of the operation of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) tomorrow.

Chui will attend the formal opening ceremony of the bridge in Zhuhai this morning. President Xi Jinping will preside over the ceremony.

Meanwhile, in his speech at the banquet, Chui praised the local media sector for its long-time firm stance of loving the country and Macau and serving the population, and its efforts and contributions to maintaining social harmony and ensuring the successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
