A mainlander tricked a male compatriot into transferring 140,000 yuan to a bank account on the mainland and then threw chilli oil at him, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a brief press conference yesterday in Zape.

According to Chan, the suspect surnamed Chen, a 23-year-old real-estate agent, and the victim a 36-year-old money changer, met last Friday at 11:45 p.m. outside a casino resort hotel in Cotai. Chen wanted to exchange Hong Kong dollars into yuan and asked the victim to transfer around 140,000 yuan to the mainland in exchange for HK$160,000 in cash.

Chan said that after the transfer was made, Chen flung chilli oil at the victim and ran away. The victim’s face was splashed with chilli oil giving him blurred vision, however, he still tried to chase after Chen who was running towards the Lotus border checkpoint. When the victim reached the checkpoint, he asked the Public Security Police (PSP) for assistance and they stopped the suspect.
