The State Council has appointed Fu Ziying as the director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau, according to a statement from the office on Friday.

Fu’s official biography points out that he holds a PhD in economics and is also a senior accountant, having been appointed China International Trade Representative in March 2017.

The appointment came about two months after the passing of the then director of the local liaison office, Zheng Xiaosong, who died in Macau on October 20, aged 59.

The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HMO) of the State Council in Beijing announced in a statement on October 21 that Zheng fell to his death – “because he was suffering from depression” – from the building where he lived. The news of Zheng’s death shocked political figures, civic leaders and the public at large. Many have praised him for his dedication to work and his ability to communicate with local people of different political and social backgrounds.

In late October, the local liaison office praised Zheng for his honesty and fruitful work. His ashes have been buried at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing, the nation’s main resting place for its highest-ranking revolutionary heroes, high government officials and other individuals deemed of major importance due to their contributions to the country.

Fu, 61, had concurrently been the China International Trade Representative (a ministerial-level position) and a vice minister of the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) since March last year, before being appointed as the director of the Liaison Office in Macau, according to the statement.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security on Friday, Fu simultaneously left his two positions in the Ministry of Commerce.

The ministry has four vice ministers in its organisational structure.
