The University of Macau (UM) confirmed yesterday that a postgraduate student rented out an on-campus accommodation unit to others via an online home rental platform, according to government-owned broadcaster TDM yesterday.

The public university has ordered the student to move out of the unit, the TDM report said.

Yesterday’s UM confirmation came after a report by Orange Post – an online media outlet run by the Communication Society of the University of Macau Students’ Union (UMSU) –on Saturday, saying that the postgraduate student started to rent out the unit via online home rental platform Airbnb in October last year. The report did not mention the student’s gender.

This photo published by Orange Post on Saturday shows the room of one of the University of Macau’s Postgraduate Houses allegedly posted on Airbnb by a postgraduate student who rented out the room to guests via the US-based online home-sharing giant. The black-coloured Chinese characters added by Orange Post to the photo read “Student takes risks by renting out room to earn money”.
