The election of members of an election committee of Macau’s chief executive has been set for June 16, the local government has announced.
According to the Macau Basic Law, the chief executive shall be elected by a broadly representative election committee in accordance with the law and appointed by the central government.
The election committee consists of 400 members from four sectors – the industrial, commercial and financial sector; the cultural, educational, professional and sports sector; and the labour, social services and religious sector.
The committee also includes members of the Legislative Assembly, local deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) and members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and members of local associations.
Analysts said last week they expected the chief executive election to be held in August. The next chief executive is expected to be sworn in by President Xi Jinping in Macau on December 20.
