AMOR Almodóvar: retrospect of director’s wild cinematic magic

It’s the film awards season and with the Academy Awards (Oscars) coming soon, Cinematheque.Passion is showing over a dozen works by acclaimed Spanish director, screenwriter and producer Pedro Almodóvar.

The “Director-in-Focus: AMOR Almodóvar” marks the first film festival this year at the cinema, showcasing 13 of the director’s works, including Oscar winners “All About My Mother” (1999), “Talk to Her” (2002) and “Volver” (2006), a retrospective that reveals the compelling and wild cinematic magic of Almodóvar, the cinema’s statement said.

“Volver” means “to go back” in Spanish. “Amor” means “love”.

“All About My Mother” follows young Esteban who wants to become a writer and discovers the identity of his father, carefully concealed by his mother Manuela.

Dealing with AIDS, homosexuality, transsexualism, faith and existentialism, “All About My Mother” won the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, the Golden Globes for Best Foreign Language Film, and BAFTA Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Direction.
