In a special press conference yesterday evening, the Health Bureau (SSM) defended its decision not to grant financial aid to a victim of severe domestic violence to undergo specialist surgery outside Macau to restore her eyesight.

SSM Director Lei Chin Ion said that surgery was not the best option for the victim to have her eyesight restored, irrespective of where the operation is carried out.

Lei did not recommend surgery, but neither did he recommend any other solution to the condition.
