Graft buster urges govt to prevent nepotism

The Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) urged the government yesterday to ensure that public servants do not take direct or indirect advantage of their official status in the pursuit of their personal interests.

The city’s graft busters issued the appeal in a statement on the outcome of an investigation into alleged nepotism by the former and the current policy secretaries for administration and justice, Florinda Chan Lai Man and Sónia Chan Hoi Fan. 

Both had been accused by Macau’s former chief public prosecutor Ho Chio Meng during his trial for abuse of power and other crimes in 2016 that both Chans – who are not related – had asked him for jobs for family members in his office. Ho was sentenced in 2017 to 21 years behind bars.
