The Legislative Assembly (AL) yesterday passed a government-initiated bill on the mandatory accreditation and licensing of social workers, according to which a person has to be first accredited by the government as being fully qualified as a social worker before he or she can apply to obtain a three-year licence from the local authorities to work in the profession.
Currently, Macau does not have an official accreditation and licensing system for social workers.
The bill’s outline was passed during a plenary session of the legislature in November 2017. The legislature’s 2nd Standing Committee held 14 meetings to review the bill, which aims to ensure social workers’ professionalism and their service quality.
