In celebration of yesterday’s World Book Day, the local government organised a citywide half-hour reading activity called “April 23 Reading in the City” at 3:30 p.m. with nearly 20,000 people reading at the same time in Macau, Hong Kong and Guangdong, Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Mok Ian Ian said yesterday.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) co-organised the reading activity at the Old Courthouse in Avenida da Praia Grande. Mok talked about her reading experiences and read part of a Chinese novel to the audience. The event was attended by about 120 officials, secondary school pupils and media representatives.
World Book Day was first celebrated on April 23 in1995, and went on to become an annual event to promote reading, publishing and copyright organised by the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), according to Wikipedia.
