A Hong Kong man surnamed Mak was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) when he went through immigration at the Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal last Wednesday. Mak allegedly hacked the computer system of a UK medicine company to cheat it out of about HK$3 million, a PJ spokesperson said in a special press conference last Thursday.

According to the spokesperson, the Public Prosecution Office (MP) received a report from the UK company in 2017 that Mak had allegedly hacked the company’s computer system so that he could monitor its business operations and money transfer procedures.

After hacking its email system, Mak sent a fraudulent email to the company requesting the remittance of money to an account at a bank in Macau. Following Mak’s email, an employee of the UK company remitted US$395,340 (about HK$3.1 million at the current exchange rate) to the account. After the remittance, Mak tried to blackmail the company by threatening to release the company’s internal information if it did not purchase virtual currency worth US$60,000 (about 484,830 patacas at the current exchange rate).
