Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac said yesterday the government would propose tougher penalties for those employing non-resident workers in jobs that are not covered by their officially approved job description.

Leong attended a plenum in the legislature’s hemicycle which discussed a debate motion by directly-elected lawmaker-cum-unionist Ella Lei.

The legislature passed Lei’s debate motion last month, the topic of which was whether the government should propose tougher penalties for those hiring illegal workers and those employing non-resident workers in jobs that are not covered by their officially approved job description. Lei’s debate motion came after a 22-year-old female scooter rider died on March 2 in a crash with a car driven by a non-resident worker from the mainland who was illegally working as a chauffeur when the accident happened in Cotai on March 1. The 40-year-old male driver was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) on March 2, facing a possible charge of negligent homicide.
